A mallard on my porch made me flip on bird feeders

I always thought feeders were a waste because I only saw house sparrows, but then a neighbor in Greensboro told me her goldfinches stopped coming after she stopped feeding thistle, so I tried a nyjer sock for 3 months and now I've got a whole flock, anyone else write off feeders too soon?
