A tip about sunflower hearts changed my feeder game completely
I used to buy the mixed seed bags from the big box store because they were cheap. Put out a tube feeder and got mostly house sparrows and a few mourning doves picking up the scraps below. Then a lady at the local nature center in Des Moines told me I was basically feeding the birds I didn't want. She said switch to just black oil sunflower hearts and watch what shows up. I figured why not since it was only $12 for a decent bag. Within three days I had goldfinches, chickadees, and a pair of cardinals that never touched the old mix. Turns out the sparrows don't like the hearts as much and the cool birds do. Has anyone else noticed a big difference when they dropped the filler seeds?
