Appreciation post: I planted a native dogwood in my yard in Charlotte and the bird visits doubled in two years
Everyone talks about putting out feeders, but I think the real magic is planting native stuff. I put in a single flowering dogwood tree in the spring of 2022, and now I'm seeing way more cardinals and blue jays than before. They're there for the berries and the bugs it brings, not just my seed. Has anyone else seen a big change from just one specific plant?

I get the native plant idea, but my feeders still bring in way more birds than my bushes ever have.

Totally get that. Feeders are like fast food for birds, quick and easy. But those native bushes are the long game. They bring in bugs for chicks to eat, which feeders don't do. Takes a couple seasons for the plants to really fill in and become a proper habitat. You'll see different birds, like warblers, that never touch seed.
