Counted 41 house sparrows in my feeder log and didn't believe the number
I keep a little notebook by the kitchen window where I mark down birds at the feeder, mostly just scribbles for my own fun. Last Saturday I added up the whole month for the first time and got 41 house sparrows in a single day. I actually went back and recounted twice because I assumed I'd double marked some rows. Nope, the flock really is that big out there on the patio in Fort Wayne. The weird part is I only set out two feeders this spring, and now they empty in about a day and a half. It got me wondering if I'm helping them crowd out the chickadees that used to show up. The juncos I used to see in November haven't come around much either. Has anyone made the call to cut back on seed to thin out the sparrow crowd, and did the other birds actually come back?
