Ditching the fancy suet cage for a cheap mesh bag worked better

Everyone raves about those metal suet cages with the little tail props, but mine sat empty for 6 weeks while woodpeckers ignored it. I tossed a plain onion mesh bag with a suet block inside over a branch near my deck in Columbus, and within 2 days the downy woodpeckers found it. The flexible mesh seems easier for them to grip than the rigid bars, plus it swings less in the wind. Has anyone else had better luck with improvised feeders over the store-bought kind?

Birds really dig flimsy, cheap stuff though, my metal one's packed daily.
