Had to choose between a heated bird bath and a bigger seed hopper for my Ohio yard

My budget was tight, just $80, and winter was coming. I went with the heated bath because the creek froze over. It worked, I saw a dozen cardinals using it last Tuesday. But now I'm refilling the seed every other day. Did I pick wrong?

Look at those cardinals using the bath, you definitely made the right call. The seed is going fast because you've created a reliable spot with food AND water now. That's a win, even if it costs a bit more in seed.

Read that birds need both to really stick around.

Exactly, that's the whole point @harpery47. It's not just about putting out a feeder. You have to give them a reason to stay. Water is a huge deal, especially when it's hot or cold. They need to drink and they need to bathe to keep their feathers right. Once they know your yard has both things they need every single day, that's when they move in. You stop being a random snack stop and become their regular diner. That's why the seed goes faster, but you get to see them all the time.
