Hit 42 bird species in my yard just this year so far
I started keeping a list back in January just for fun, and this morning I hit 42 when a gray catbird showed up at my berry bushes. That number surprised me because I thought I'd only see maybe 25 or 30 in my little suburban lot. What's your yard count right now and what was the weirdest bird that bumped it up?

Oh the catbird is a great yard bird to get, they love berry bushes and will keep coming back if you plant more. My count is at 38 and the weirdest one was a yellow-bellied sapsucker that spent a whole week drilling holes in my maple tree.

Feel you on the sapsucker thing. Had one show up a few years back and it drove me nuts for about two weeks straight, just hammering away at a birch tree I have. I was worried it would kill the tree, but it bounced back fine after the bird moved on. Bird counts are funny that way - you never know what weird stuff is gonna show up in your own yard.
