I think people are mixing up house sparrows and song sparrows... here's the easy trick I found
I used to think they were the same bird too until my grandpa pointed it out last fall at his place in Ohio. He said look at the chest - song sparrows have those dark streaks that kinda run together in a spot, while house sparrows have a clean bib look. Also house sparrows are chunkier and hang out in groups near buildings. Song sparrows are more solo and like brushy areas. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Am I the only one who spent years getting this wrong?

Has anyone actually measured how their songs differ? House sparrows just do those repetitive cheap cheap sounds, but song sparrows have actual variety in their calls with different notes and patterns. Thats the real giveaway once you hear it side by side. Even from a distance you can tell which is which just by listening for 10 seconds. Song sparrows also tend to flit their tails up and down when theyre perched while house sparrows are more still. The chest thing is good but the behavior and sound are way more reliable in my experience.

I used to rely on the chest markings to tell them apart but you're totally right about the songs. I spent like 20 minutes last weekend listening to both side by side on YouTube and now I can't unhear the difference. The tail thing is a solid tip too, I never noticed that before.

Twenty minutes? That's dedication I reserve for my coffee order.
