My terra cotta saucer took ten days before a chickadee found it. I just dump it and give it a quick scrub with a stiff brush every morning when I fill it. They seem used to the routine now and don't mind me being out there for a minute.

Do you scrub it with just water, or do you use any soap? I'd worry about leaving any soapy residue behind.

Honestly my soap skills are so bad I'd probably leave a bubble bath for the birds, but @gavinwells has the right idea with just a quick scrub.
