I used to think a bird feeder was just a bird feeder, but a neighbor in Phoenix set me straight
She saw my single tube feeder and said it was basically a fast food joint for aggressive birds like house sparrows, scaring off the smaller ones. I switched to a platform feeder with a roof and put it under my mesquite tree, and now I get way more variety, like verdins and curved-bill thrashers. Anyone else find that changing the feeder type totally changed their backyard crowd?

Honestly, that neighbor sounds like the bird mafia boss of Phoenix. Tbh, my old feeder was basically a dive bar for the local pigeon thugs.

Hey mila_campbell25, did your pigeons ever try to collect a seed tax?

Hold on, that neighbor gave you bad advice. A tube feeder is fine. The aggressive birds were there first, that's just nature. You switched and now you're just catering to a different crowd, not a better one. You're basically kicking out the regulars because some picky new customers showed up. Let the sparrows eat, they gotta live too.
