My bird feeder pole snapped in half during a crazy wind gust yesterday
I was in my backyard in Springfield watching a pair of cardinals when a huge gust came through. The metal pole holding my big tube feeder just bent and snapped right at the base! The feeder crashed down, scattering seed everywhere and scaring off the birds. I ran out and picked up the pieces, feeling totally bummed. I grabbed a spare wooden post from my garage and had a new, sturdier setup done in about 20 minutes. The cardinals actually came back this morning, which felt like a huge win. Has anyone else had a feeder disaster and managed to fix it quickly?

Honestly that sounds like a huge waste of time and effort. My neighbor in Columbus had his feeder wrecked last winter and he just gave up on the whole thing. He said it was nature telling him to stop messing with the wildlife. All that seed just attracts rats and squirrels anyway. I saw your fix as a temporary band-aid, the wood will rot or another storm will take it out. Sometimes you just have to accept the loss and not rebuild.

Yeah but phoenixb34, isn't the whole point just to watch the birds? If it brings you some quiet joy for a season before it falls apart, wasn't it worth it?

Metal poles can get brittle with temperature swings. I've seen it happen with patio furniture too. Your wooden post might actually last longer if you used pressure-treated lumber and sealed the part that goes in the ground. The squirrels are a separate problem.
