My suet feeder got raided by a squirrel army yesterday

I was watching from my kitchen window in Springfield when a big gray squirrel figured out how to hang upside down from the hook. It pulled the whole cage off and three more squirrels came out of the bushes to help. I ran outside and they all scattered, leaving the suet block on the ground. Has anyone found a truly squirrel proof way to hang these things?

That bit about the squirrel hanging upside down from the hook is the key. I read a tip once that said squirrels are basically furry little gymnasts, so you have to beat them with physics. The suggestion was to use a long wire, like a 4 or 5 foot piece of thin metal cable, and hang the feeder from the middle of it between two trees or posts. The idea is that the squirrel can't climb down the slippery wire to reach the feeder, because it just spins and drops them when they try. It needs to be far enough from any jump point. I tried something similar with a shepherd's hook and a big plastic dome baffle above the feeder, and it worked for a while, but a really determined one still launched itself from my fence.

Honestly, you could try feeding them separately.
