My trick to get the whole family involved with our backyard feathered friends

So, my kids were kinda bored with just looking at the feathered friends in our yard (you know how it is with short attention spans). Then I had this idea to give them names (like, we call the bright blue jay 'Bluey' and the little sparrow that always hops around 'Skippy'). It made a big difference in how they see things (honestly, it was a total shift). Now, every morning, they run to the window to check if Bluey or Skippy is there (sometimes even before breakfast). We even started a cheap notebook where we draw who comes by (which is great for their art skills, too). My husband got in on it (he wasn't sure at first) and now he points out new feathered friends we haven't named yet. It's a simple thing, but it turned watching from a quiet hobby into a loud, happy family time (no more complaints about being bored). If you're trying to get your family interested, I'd say give naming a try (it really helps, trust me).

Bluey's visits inspired a DIY bird feeder project last weekend.

DIY bird feeder projects sound fun... we used old milk cartons for ours.

Love that idea... but careful with milk cartons like @the_thea mentioned, the edges can be sharp for the birds. Maybe sand them down first.
