Overheard a guy at the park say cardinals are 'just common birds' and it got me thinking...

Why do people think a bird has to be rare to be worth watching, like that bright red male I saw chowing down at my feeder this morning didn't totally make my day just by being there?

Has anyone else had that thing where a “common” bird does something so weird you can’t stop thinking about it? My neighbor had a starling last summer that kept landing on her car mirror and staring at itself for like ten minutes straight, pecking at it sometimes. She called me over all excited and I just stood there watching this shiny black bird have a little moment with its own reflection. It wasn’t rare or flashy, but we still crack up about that bird whenever we see a starling now.

That bright red really does make any feeder feel like a special moment, rarity be darned.

My buddy Mark had a Northern Flicker show up at his place last spring - one with that same bright red patch. @miles_garcia he told me it landed on his little metal feeder and just sat there for like five minutes not even eating, just checking everything out. He snapped like 20 photos before it finally took off, and he still texts me about it anytime we talk about birds lol.
