Put my feeder 6 feet from the window instead of 15 and finally got real photos
For two years I had my seed feeder hanging off a maple at the back of the yard, probably 15 feet out and mostly hidden by branches. I'd see chickadees and house finches out there but getting a decent look meant standing at the glass and squinting, and any photo came out as a blurry blob. Three weeks ago I moved a second feeder to a shepherd's hook about 6 feet from the kitchen window, right next to the lilac bush. The difference is not small. The birds hit the close feeder within about 40 minutes, and now I can actually see the markings on a goldfinch without binoculars. I've counted 11 species at that one spot since the move, including a downy woodpecker that keeps coming back for the suet. The lilac gives them cover so they don't spook, which I think matters more than the distance itself. Only downside is the window streaks show up in photos. Anyone figured out a cheap fix for glare, or do I just need to shoot at an angle?
