Question about feeding birds: is my neighbor right that suet in spring is a mistake?
Last week I put out a suet cake in my yard in Akron and my neighbor told me I'm doing more harm than good once the weather warms up, because the fat can go bad and mess up birds' feathers. I looked it up and one source said suet is fine year round if it's rendered, while another said to switch to plain seed by April to avoid the mess. Half the chickadees and one very rude starling seem to love it, so I'm torn between keeping it up and swapping it out. Has anyone here fed suet through spring and had issues, or is this one of those things people just repeat without testing?
