Question about suet cakes versus loose seed for winter birds
So I put out loose black oil sunflower seed all last winter and got maybe 4 or 5 regular visitors, mostly house sparrows and one very bossy blue jay. Back in November I hung a plain suet cake in a little cage feeder about 6 feet off the ground near my kitchen window in Rochester, and within 3 days I had a pair of downy woodpeckers and a nuthatch that come back every single morning. The thing I figured out is the seed was getting wet and clumping in the tray, but the suet stays put through rain and the birds that want it actually stay in view instead of hopping around on the ground. I'm not saying seed is bad, I still keep a tube feeder up, but the suet cake cost me about $3 and did more for my window watching than a $25 bag of seed. Has anyone had luck with the homemade peanut butter suet recipes, and do the birds around here actually go for them or just ignore it?
