Spent $40 on a fancy heated bird bath that cracked after the first freeze

Bought one of those ceramic heated bird baths from a garden center in Denver, worked great for three weeks until a single night below 20 degrees split it right down the middle, has anyone else had better luck with the metal ones?

Yeah, ceramic's not great for sudden temp swings.

Yeah, "sudden temp swings" are the real killer, @grace_campbell. It's funny how that same principle shows up everywhere, like how I can't just blast my phone with a hairdryer after dropping it in a puddle. Almost anything that's meant to hold something steady, from a mug to a tool, hates being rushed from one extreme to another.

That whole idea of slow transitions is something I notice even with my good cast iron skillet. You can't just crank the heat to high and expect it to behave, it needs a gentle warm up or you'll end up with hot spots that ruin whatever you're cooking. Same with old wooden furniture, you bring it into a dry heated house from a damp garage and it'll crack if you don't let it adjust slowly. It's like everything has its own little comfort zone and getting pushed too fast just makes it break. Even people are like that, you know, sudden changes in routine or temperature just throw everything off.
