Spent $80 on a fancy suet feeder and the squirrels still won

I bought one of those "squirrel-proof" metal suet feeders from the hardware store in March for around 80 bucks. The mechanism is supposed to close when a heavy bird lands on it, but the squirrels just hang upside down from the top and eat right through the wire mesh. Anyone else have a feeder that actually stops them, or is it just a waste of money?

I read somewhere that hanging the feeder on a smooth pole or using a baffle is the only real way to stop them. That mesh is basically a free snack bar for a determined squirrel.
