That $60 heated bird bath was a game changer this winter

I dropped $60 on a heated bird bath after the first freeze hit in late November, and it paid off fast. My regular bath was solid ice for three days straight, but the heated one kept water open and brought in a flock of juncos I'd never seen before. Has anyone else tried one of these in a colder zone?

Funny how a little warm water brings everything back to life.

Did you catch that documentary on BBC about ancient seeds being revived after centuries in permafrost? @wesley_adams is right about the warm water trick - I read somewhere that some seeds need that heat shock to crack their outer shell and finally wake up. It's like they've been waiting all that time for the right temperature to flip a chemical switch inside them. Always amazed me how something that looks dead can just spring back to life with the right conditions.
