That moment I had to pick between an open feeder and a covered one for my finches...
I spent two weeks watching house sparrows bully my goldfinches at the tube feeder before I swapped it for a mesh sock. The sparrows gave up after three days and now I get 15 goldfinches a morning in my yard in Portland. Has anyone else dealt with aggressive birds taking over your setup like that?

Holy crap, 15 goldfinches in one morning? That's insane! I thought I was lucky when I got up to 6 or 7 at my sock feeder in Philly. You must be the goldfinch whisperer or something, that's wild. How much nyjer are you going through a week? I refill mine every 3 days and that's only with a small flock.

Wait dumping the tube feeder was the right call. Mesh socks are basically a goldfinch magnet and sparrows hate hanging upside down, which is honestly hilarious to watch. But 15 goldfinches a morning? You might actually be dealing with a full blown flock at that point. You sure you want that many? They go through nyjer seed like it's going out of style and the mess under the feeder gets ridiculous. I had a similar situation with starlings and just switched to a caged feeder, problem solved in a day.

Robert is right, I used to think tube feeders were fine but mesh socks changed my whole setup.
