That moment I realized I was scaring off the cardinals with my feeder placement

I spent like 8 months wondering why I'd see cardinals in my yard but they'd never touch my feeder. Figured they just didn't like the seed mix I was using. Then my neighbor came over last week and pointed out the feeder was like 3 feet from a big window. She said they probably saw their reflection and got spooked. Moved it about 10 feet away into some shrubs and now I've got a pair coming by every morning. Anyone else make a dumb setup mistake that took forever to catch?

Aw man that's rough but relatable. Did you ever try taping something to the window to break up the reflection before you moved the feeder?

Taping something to the window works for some people but I actually think moving the feeder was the smarter call. Birds can still get confused or stressed by reflections even with tape, and you fixed the root problem instead of patching it. Cardinals are skittish little guys and putting them further from the house just makes more sense for their comfort.

Yeah moving it was definitely the better fix. Tape's just a bandaid.
