The blue jay that figured out my suet feeder lock
Last Tuesday I watched a blue jay spend 20 minutes pecking at the latch on my new suet feeder until it popped open, and he flew off with the whole cake. Has anyone else had a bird outsmart your feeder setup like that?

Oh man, that's wild! But just a small thing - raccoons actually have super dexterous paws that are basically like little hands, so them figuring out a twist-lock isn't quite the same as a bird using its beak on a latch.

Do you think he was specifically targeting that latch or just randomly pecking until something gave? Honestly, I had a similar thing happen with a raccoon on my trash can - it figured out the twist-lock in about two minutes flat. These animals are way more clever than we give them credit for. Ngl, now I'm half expecting to see a tutorial video from that blue jay on YouTube.

@ray136 I don't buy it, birds aren't that smart. That jay was just lucky, pecking random things until the latch popped open by accident, not because he knew what he was doing. If they were that clever, they'd be building their own birdhouses by now instead of using ours.
