The blue jay that turned my birdbath into a peanut stash

For a month, my concrete birdbath in the backyard was just for splashing, but then a single blue jay started dropping unshelled peanuts in it every afternoon (I counted 27 over two weeks). I think the squirrels finally caught on because yesterday I found it completely empty, just a bunch of wet peanut shells scattered on the ground around it. Has anyone else had a bird use a water feature as a weird, temporary pantry?

My friend's cardinal kept hiding dog kibble in her fountain for weeks.

Honestly, that just sounds like normal bird stuff to me. A birdbath is for water, so putting food in it seems like a mistake, not a plan. The blue jay was probably just confused or hiding snacks from itself. The squirrels finding them is the most predictable part of the whole story. Calling it a pantry gives the bird way too much credit.
