TIL a $6 pack of black oil sunflower seed beat my $40 tube feeder and the birds let me know
I know this sounds like a hot take but hear me out. Back in March I set up a fancy tube feeder on my deck in Salem and dumped 20 pounds of mixed seed in it, and for two solid months I got maybe three house finches and a squirrel who treated it like a buffet. So on a whim I bought a cheap bag of straight black oil sunflower seed and scattered some on the railing, plus stuck a few in a mesh sock feeder I had lying in the shed. Within four days I had chickadees, a pair of cardinals, and what I am pretty sure is a goldfinch fighting over the railing. The mixed seed bag sat in a bucket going stale. What I learned is that the cheap stuff with milo and red millet in it mostly gets kicked to the ground, and the birds around here want the high fat seed they can crack open fast. I felt a little dumb, honestly, because the tube feeder was the nice part and the seed was the whole problem. If you are getting nothing at your setup, what is in your seed bag right now, because I bet that is your answer.
