Vent: Why does everyone keep calling sparrows 'finches' when they have completely different beak shapes?

I spent 20 minutes last week explaining to my neighbor that the brown bird with a thick cone beak at her feeder was a house sparrow not a house finch, and she still posted a photo online calling it a finch, so does anyone else get annoyed when people mix up these common backyard birds or am I just being too picky?

Man oh man, I had a similar thing happen with a neighbor and goldfinches. She kept calling them canaries and I was like those are native birds, not some pet escapee from a cage. I spent a whole Saturday showing her the field guide and she still calls them canaries to this day. Sometimes you just gotta accept that people will see what they want to see I guess.

Read somewhere that people misidentify things 30% of the time and just never admit it.

Yeah, the "see what they want to see" part really stuck with me. @hugo_robinson25 maybe the goldfinch thing is harmless but what if it was something like a hawk and she thought it was a pigeon? That kind of misidentification could get messy.
