Had to pick between a pellet grill or a stick burner for my first big comp
I signed up for the Kansas City BBQ Society event in July and needed gear fast. My buddy said get a Traeger for easy temp control, but my gut wanted the real smoke from an offset. Went with the offset, and spent the whole night babysitting the fire while my ribs got too much bark. Anyone else regret their first cooker choice at a competition?

Yeah, that first gear choice is a classic trap. It's like buying a manual sports car for your daily commute because it feels pure, then just being tired of shifting in traffic. The romantic idea always fights with the practical reality.

But that tired feeling in traffic is the whole point... it makes you pay attention. The shifting keeps you connected to the car in a way an automatic never could. That "trap" is what makes the drive real, not just something you sleep through. The fight between the romantic idea and the practical reality is what makes it special. Giving that up for comfort feels like losing the soul of driving.
