My firebox door hinge gave out right before a big cook last weekend

I was getting my offset smoker up to temp for a brisket when the whole door just sagged. The hinge pin on the left side had completely rusted through. I had to use a couple of heavy duty hose clamps to clamp the door to the firebox body just to keep it closed and hold heat. It worked okay, but I was nervous about it the whole 14 hour cook. Has anyone else had to do a quick field repair like that on their pit?

Man, that sounds like a total hack job... I would never trust some hose clamps on a hot firebox for that long. You're lucky it held, that's just asking for a burn or a ruined cook. A proper weld is the only real fix for something that important. Honestly, I'd just cancel the cook and get it fixed right instead of risking it.

Just slap a second clamp on there and keep cooking, it'll hold fine.

My old Oklahoma Joe hinge snapped, used a big C-clamp.
