Rant: my temp probe died at hour 9 on a pork butt and my party was at 5
Was doing a 9 lb pork butt on my offset in the backyard last Saturday for my kid's birthday, party was set for 5pm and everything was cruising along fine at 250. Went out at 7am to check and my 4 year old probe was reading 165 when the meat felt way softer than that, so I grabbed my backup instant read. Sure enough, probe was off by almost 30 degrees and the butt was actually sitting at 193, basically done way earlier than I planned. I wrapped it in towels in a cooler for about 5 hours and it held fine, pulled it right when folks showed up and nobody knew the difference. Now I test my probes in boiling water before every cook, takes two minutes. Anyone got a probe brand that actually lasts more than a couple years?
