Showerthought: My $40 BBQ thermometer from Walmart cost me a whole brisket 😢
So I was prepping for my neighbor's 4th of July party last weekend and figured I'd save some cash by grabbing this cheapo instant read thermometer instead of ordering that Thermapen I've been eyeing. I thought "how bad can it be for burgers and ribs?" Well, it was off by like 15 degrees on the low end and I pulled a whole 14 pound prime brisket off the Yoder at what I thought was 203 internal. Ended up being more like 188 and that meat was tough as shoe leather. Everyone was polite about it but I knew it was a fail. That $40 savings ended up wasting about $80 worth of meat and I felt like a goof in front of the whole block. Has anyone else had a cheap gadget sabotage their cook like that?

My neighbor ruined an entire tri-tip with a discount meat tenderizer mallet once.

That cheap mallet probably had jagged edges from the factory. It's like using a rock to tenderize meat - you're just shredding the surface fibers instead of breaking them down evenly.
