Unpopular take: I don't think Aaron Franklin is the gold standard anymore

Last week I drove 4 hours to Lockhart for a brisket tasting tour, and I stopped at 3 places that beat Franklin's line-forever spot in Austin. Maybe it's because I've had his stuff 5 times over the past 3 years, but the last one was dry on the flat and oversalted on the bark. Has anyone else felt like the mystique faded once you've tried a few smaller pits like Kreuz or Smitty's?

Kreuz is in Lockhart, not Austin, but fair point on Franklin slipping lately.

Lockhart is worth the drive though, that's the real deal. Tried Terry Black's last month and it hit the spot way better than Franklin did.
