Just found out how many people get hurt sharpening knives each year

I was reading a safety report from the trade group in Kansas City... it said over 2,000 butchers needed hospital care last year just from sharpening tools. I always thought the big cuts were the problem, not the prep work. My hand slipped on the steel just last Tuesday, so it really hit home. Anyone else have a close call while putting an edge on their blades?

Yeah, I always keep a cut glove on my free hand now.

Ever think about how a slip with a steel is almost worse than a cut from a sharp knife? The steel doesn't even feel that dangerous until you're putting pressure and your hand just goes. I took a chunk out of my thumb last year that bled forever. @logan_ellis has the right idea with the cut glove, I should really get one for sharpening too. It's easy to get lazy when you're just trying to get a quick edge before dinner.

Honestly, a cut glove feels like it'd get in the way for sharpening.
