A friend told me I was holding my knife wrong and it changed everything

I was prepping veggies for a potluck that got canceled last Saturday, so I decided to just cook for myself anyway. My buddy came over and saw me gripping the chef's knife like a hammer, and he said "you're gonna tire your hand out in ten minutes." He showed me the pinch grip on the blade instead of the handle, and I tried it for a whole hour of chopping carrots and onions. My wrist didn't cramp up at all, and I got through everything way faster. Has anyone else had a simple grip change totally improve their cooking game?

Stopped reading at "pinch grip changed everything." Honestly I've tried it a bunch of times and it just feels awkward and unstable to me. My hands are on the smaller side so I actually get better control choking up on the handle near the bolster, not pinching the blade itself. I've been chopping fine for years with a bruised wrist from gripping too hard, but switching to a lighter knife helped way more than changing my hold ever did.

Oh man, same thing happened to me! I used to hold my knife like a caveman gripping a club and could barely chop two onions before my hand started hurting. Once I learned the pinch grip it was like a whole new world opened up, now I actually look forward to prepping veggies lol.

Makes you wonder why nobody teaches that hack in cooking class, right?
