Drove an hour to that famous BBQ spot only to find a 'closed for renovation' sign

I was so ready for brisket last Saturday. Had my eyes on Smoky Joe's in Austin for weeks, seen all the Instagram posts. Got there at 11 AM and the place was dark with a handwritten note on the door saying they'd be shut down until next month. Sat in my car for ten minutes just staring at the empty parking lot. Ended up at a gas station taqueria down the road and honestly the barbacoa tacos were way better. The tortillas were hand pressed right there and the salsa had actual heat. Still stung that I wasted a full tank of gas though. Anyone else have a hyped spot fall flat like that?

Did you at least try the green salsa at the gas station?

@ninas67 my buddy actually runs that station and the green salsa is just leftover taco truck stuff, not bad at all.

Spit out my coffee reading that. Gas station salsa? That's a bold move there friend. I've seen those jars sitting next to the hot dogs on that roller grill for who knows how long. Green salsa especially scares me - that stuff can go bad in weird ways you can't even see. My cousin Tom got sick from gas station nachos once. Took him three days to recover. No way I'm risking that for some mystery sauce. You're braver than me for even considering it honestly.
