Found out my gym membership cancellation took 3 months longer than I thought

I was going through old bank statements last weekend and noticed I was paying $45 a month to a gym I thought I canceled back in April. Turns out their fine print lets them charge you for two more months after you quit. I found this in the contract I signed three years ago, buried on page 7. I called and they said it's standard policy, which surprised me. Has anyone else caught a hidden charge like this after a cancellation?

You signed a contract without reading page 7, that's on you.

Page 7 of most contracts is where they hide things like binding arbitration clauses or mandatory fee increases. I watched a friend lose $5,000 because they didn't check a similar section in their lease agreement. It's not just about "reading everything" but about knowing which pages are the danger zones. Companies know most people skim the first few pages and then give up, so they bury the bad stuff right where you're tired. You can't expect someone to catch every hidden landmine when the system is designed to trip you up. Until contracts are written in plain language, blaming the signer feels like blaming the victim.
