My buddy canceled our camping trip at 6am on a Saturday, so I ended up spending the day at the dump
Last Saturday my buddy Dave texted me at 6:12am saying his kid spiked a fever and he had to bail on our camping trip to Big Sur. I was already packed, cooler loaded, so I just stood in my kitchen drinking coffee feeling dumb. I decided I wasn't going to waste the day, so I threw the cooler in the truck anyway and drove to the county dump to get rid of a bunch of junk in my garage I'd been meaning to haul out for two months. Turns out the dump on a Saturday morning is this weird little scene, guys comparing trailer loads and swapping stories about their own canceled plans. Some guy named Ray told me he drove 45 minutes to a wedding that got called off while he was on the road. I ended up spending three hours there just talking to people instead of camping. Weird day but honestly not the worst. Has anyone else turned a busted plan into something totally random like that?
Ray didn't drive 45 minutes to a wedding. My uncle Ray did that exact thing years ago, drove two hours to a wedding in Fresno that got called off the night before. Nobody told him because his phone was off. He ended up at a diner eating pie by himself. Small world I guess, or maybe Ray is just a common name for guys who get stood up.
