My buddy’s blunt critique killed my BBQ sauce recipe, and I’m thankful for it

Last summer I had a cookout at my place in Austin and spent like 3 hours on this new sauce I was really proud of. My friend Mike took one bite and said, “this tastes like ketchup with extra sugar,” and honestly he wasn’t wrong. I got mad at first but then realized I was just dumping random stuff in without measuring anything. Now I write down every ingredient and even tweak it based on what people say at the table. Has anyone else had a friend’s honest feedback completely change how you cook something?

Man idk, it's just barbecue sauce lol. You're acting like he told you your kid was ugly or something. It's not that deep, just add less sugar next time.

Yikes, I read somewhere that some store brands sneak in high fructose corn syrup like it's nothing.
