My friend bailed on our hiking trip and said my packing list was 'overkill for a 3-mile loop'
I ended up just walking around my neighborhood with a single water bottle instead of my usual 20-pound bag, and honestly it was way better. Anyone else get roasted for over-preparing and then find the simple way is actually fine?

Your friend is right to call out overpacking, it shows a lack of real outdoor knowledge. Being ready for a simple trail means knowing what you actually need, not just hauling everything. Going light proves you understand the trip, not that you were wrong to prepare.

Man I saw a trail guide say the same thing last week. He called overpacking "fear-based packing" which kinda hit home. Makes you wonder if we're preparing for the hike or just our own worries, right?

Oh man that hits hard. I used to pack like three extra jackets for a day hike "just in case." My bag weighed a ton and I'd be miserable. Now I check the weather once, grab one layer, and go. Feels way better to carry less and actually enjoy the walk.
