My weekend hike got rained out, so I tried a new hobby instead
I was all set to hike the Eagle Rock loop last Saturday, but the forecast called for heavy rain. Instead of just watching TV, I pulled out an old puzzle of the New York City skyline I got for Christmas. I spent about four hours on it with some coffee, and it was weirdly relaxing. Has anyone else found a good indoor activity for a canceled outdoor plan?

Last year my camping trip got washed out and I ended up trying to bake bread from scratch. It made me realize how many of my favorite things now started as a backup plan. My whole vegetable garden began because the nursery was out of flowers. It's funny how the forced change of a rainy day can accidentally show you what you actually like doing when you slow down.

Funny how a forced change can show you what you actually enjoy, right? I always thought puzzles were a boring last resort, but getting stuck inside last winter made me try one. Now I keep a few in the closet, just in case. It's like what @claire_gibson said about her garden, these backup plans can turn into real quiet-time favorites.
