PSA: my uncle in Fresno killed our monthly poker game and I feel weirdly fine about it
We had a standing poker night the first Friday of every month for 11 years, and last week my uncle Ray just called it off because half the guys moved out to Clovis. I keep waiting to feel bad about it, but mostly I just like having my Friday back for yard work and a movie. Anyone else lose a long running group thing and end up relieved instead of sad?
My bowling league folded after 9 years when the alley on Blackstone got sold and turned into a storage place. I waited for that sad feeling to hit and it just never showed up. What helped me was giving the night a new purpose right away so it didn't feel like a hole in my week. I started doing a standing breakfast with two of the guys from the league once a month, way less work than hauling a ball around. If the poker crew still wants to see each other, try meeting up every other month for lunch instead, no chips or cards needed. Losing the game doesn't have to mean losing the people, and you get your Fridays back either way.
