A veteran in Toledo said my brush was too big for liner flues, and he was right
I was running an 8 inch poly brush on 6 inch liner flues for about two years because it was what I had on the truck. An older sweep named Dale watched me pull it through a liner in Toledo and said flat out, that brush is scrubbing the cap and missing the walls. I switched to a 6 inch brush with softer bristles and my debris pull went from a few cups to almost a full bucket on the same flue. Now I keep three sizes on the truck and match the brush to the liner instead of grabbing the closest one. It takes me maybe two extra minutes to swap heads but I catch way more creosote on the first pass. Has anyone else had a brush size callout change how they load their van?

Dale sounds like a guy who has seen it all. I ran a 10 inch brush on 7 inch flues for a couple years because it was the only one that fit my rod adapter. A guy named Ray in Sandusky watched me work and told me the same thing, that I was polishing the cap and skating right past the walls. Switched to a 7 inch and the junk I pulled out went from maybe two cups to half a bucket on the first run. Now I carry a 5, 6, 7, and 8 and I match the head before I even get off the truck. That two minutes to swap saves me from going back up a second time, which is worth way more than the time it costs. Loading the van around sizes instead of grabbing whatever is closest changed how I do every job now.
