I keep seeing people in my town skip the crown wash step
They just sweep the flue and call it done, but that cement cap needs cleaning too or water gets in. I learned that the hard way after a job in Greenville where the whole brick stack started crumbling a year later. How many of you guys still do a full wash every time?

But is a full wash always needed if the cap looks fine?

Just because the outside looks good doesn't mean the inside isn't gross. I had a hat that seemed fine until I smelled the sweatband up close. It was pretty bad. A quick rinse won't get the oils and gunk out of the fabric inside. You really need to wash the whole thing properly. Trust me, your future self will thank you for not putting a dirty hat back on your head.

The cap is the cleanest part. The sweatband inside is a different story, usually holding onto a full week of skin oils and hair product.
