Just realized old soot buildup hides creosote glaze way better than I thought
Last Tuesday I pulled a brush through a flue in Raleigh that looked clean on the surface but three passes later I was scraping off a shiny layer I should have spotted right away. Has anyone else nearly missed glaze because the soot made everything look the same?

Grab a bright flashlight and hold it at a low angle against the flue walls. That shiny glaze catches the light differently than dull soot, like a wet spot on dry pavement. I also started running my gloved hand along the surface after brushing - the texture gives it away every time. Push a dry rag up there too; if it comes back with a slick feel instead of dusty, you've got glaze hiding under the carbon. Saves a lot of second-guessing.

Felt that, it's way too easy to miss when the buildup blends in like that.

Wait, they ACTUALLY blend in that well? Dude that's insane. I would've been staring right at it and never known.
