My grandpa told me to always carry a spare set of brushes for the rotary head, even on small jobs.
I thought he was just being old-fashioned, but last month in Bozeman a customer's flue had way more creosote than expected and I wore mine right down. That extra set saved me a two-hour drive back to the shop. What's one piece of old-school advice that's actually saved your butt?

Man, that spare parts rule is golden.

Remember that guy who always said he'd fix his own car? He bought a whole project truck for cheap, said he had all the parts. The thing sat in his yard for two years because he could never find the right alternator bracket... he finally sold it for scrap last month. That rule would have saved him so much time and money.

My uncle had a similar rule about never starting a job without checking the truck inventory first. It's not just about having the part, it's knowing you have the right one. That story from @the_grace is a perfect example of how a quick check can save a project from stalling out for months.
