Old timer at the supply house was right about nylon brushes
For years I used wire brushes on flues because that is what my dad taught me. Last month a retired sweep named Hank told me nylon is better for the clay liners. After a few jobs I can see the difference in less scratching. Has anyone else stopped using wire on tile?

Oh yeah, Hank was right for sure... nylon is way gentler on the clay.

Hank gets it. Nylon is way easier on the clay.

My grandpa swore by wire brushes for forty years and I just followed along... Never questioned it until I ran into Hank myself at the Apex supply house last fall. He showed me the scratches on a test piece and that was enough for me. Three jobs later with the nylon and my clay liners look way cleaner with none of those fine grooves. I wish someone had told me sooner, but I guess old habits die hard.
