TIL that most people don't get the danger of a dirty flue

My cousin asked why I work in the summer, thinking we only clean in winter. I explained that animals nest in chimneys year-round. A blocked flue can cause carbon monoxide to seep inside. It's frustrating how few grasp the real risks we manage.

A news story last year covered a family that got carbon monoxide poisoning because squirrels built a nest in their chimney during spring. They hadn't used the fireplace in months and didn't know it was blocked. Their detector was old and didn't go off. It shows how the risk is there even when you aren't burning anything.

Replace the chimney cap, which kept critters out for us.

Yikes, that story about the carbon monoxide is exactly why this stuff matters. A solid chimney cap is the first move, but you really gotta check those CO detectors every month too. I've seen what a blocked chimney can do, and it's not just a nuisance, it's a real health hazard. Honestly, putting off that kind of maintenance is just asking for trouble.
