Update: That job in Boise with the 1920s flue liner changed my mind on old systems

Everyone says to just replace them, but after seeing how solid the original clay was, I now push for a proper camera inspection first. Anyone else find these old liners are often salvageable?

Did the inspection show any cracks or just some surface soot?

Wait, you found a flue from the 1920s that was still solid? How is that even possible after all these years? I figured anything that old would be crumbling apart by now. Makes you wonder what else we're ripping out that could have been saved.

Yeah, what kind of material was it made from? I've seen some old clay tile liners that hold up forever if they weren't messed with, but metal usually rusts out. Was it in a part of the house that stayed really dry?
