My mother-in-law said my couch pillows looked like 'sad pancakes'

She told me they were too flat and lifeless, so I swapped out the cheap polyester filling for high-loft down inserts last weekend. Has anyone else gotten blunt feedback that actually improved their cozy setup?

That's basically interior design tough love right there.

Took me a minute to realize this is just a real life version of that thing where people won't tell you the truth until you ask the right question. Your MIL might have felt bad saying it, but honestly sometimes the most uncomfortable feedback is the most useful. Ngl, I've noticed that a lot of those small upgrades nobody talks about are actually the ones that make your space feel totally different. Down inserts are a classic example because they fix the problem without you having to buy a whole new couch or something. Tbh, I think the world would be way cozier if more people just said "hey your pillows look sad" instead of pretending everything is fine.

So what's the best way to ask for that kind of feedback without sounding needy or putting someone on the spot?
