Warning: I thought a chunky knit blanket was cozy until I actually washed one

I bought one of those big chunky knit blankets from a craft fair last winter, the kind that looks like ropes stitched together. It was super warm and looked great on my couch. But after three months of my dog sleeping on it, I tossed it in the washing machine like any normal blanket. Big mistake. It came out totally misshapen, stretched out in weird spots, and took two days to dry because the yarn held water like a sponge. A friend who knits saw the mess and told me you're not supposed to wash those, you just spot clean or hand wash them carefully. Now I'm stuck with a lumpy blanket that looks like a failed art project. Anyone else ruin a blanket by ignoring the care tag?

My chunky knit blanket now looks like a demented octopus that got run over by a lawnmower. I figured "how bad could it be" and threw it in with my towels. Big mistake. It came out so twisted and lumpy that my cat won't even sit on it anymore, and she sleeps on a cardboard box by choice. The yarn stretched out so bad in some spots it looks like a giant tried to play tug of war with it. I finally just folded it into a weird shape and hid it behind a pillow on the couch so guests can't see the disaster. Did yours turn into a modern art sculpture too?

For what it's worth joel_martinez, I had the same disaster and ended up carefully hand washing it with cold water in the bathtub and laying it flat on a drying rack for two days, and it actually came back to its normal shape. Really saved the blanket from becoming a weird lumpy mess like yours.
