Burned $600 on a vanity SEO audit, got buyer intent data that actually worked

Last quarter I paid a big-name firm for a full site audit because our demo signups were flat. They sent 40 pages of generic recommendations, most of which boiled down to add more keywords. I was pissed until I noticed their referrer analysis buried on page 22. It showed our top converting pages came from people searching for specific compliance terms, not threat names. I rebuilt three landing pages around those exact terms using just a copywriter and some internal SME time. Conversion rate went from 1.2% to 2.8% over the next 6 weeks. That audit sat in a drawer for a month before I actually dug in, so my lesson is always ask for the raw data files, not the pretty summary. Has anyone else gotten hidden value out of a service that initially felt like a waste?
